Creating and managing WinPE environments for QUEST SDA
Samba Password
- On the Appliance, configure the Samba password in the “General Settings” in the “Control Panel”.
Installing SDA Media Manager
WARNING: Reinstall with each new version or patch of the SDA.
- On the SDA interface, download and install “Media Manager”.
Drivers in WinPE
For a Windows 10 1511 deployment, it is imperative to install Windows ADK 10 1511 on your machine.
On the site: Drivers WinPE Dell
- Download the WinPE 10 drivers
- Then copy the content (remove old drivers if present) to:
- \\k2000\drivers\kbe_windows_x64
- \\k2000\drivers\kbe_windows_x86
Identifying Driver Issues
Network Driver Issues
If WinPE cannot map to KACE, confirm the issue by running IPCONFIG.
Disk Controller Driver Issues
If WinPE cannot see the hard drives
To check, run diskpart, then the command List Disk. If the disks are not visible, this indicates a driver issue.
Manual Driver Testing
To “validate” the driver in the WinPE environment, you can manually load it with the drvload command from the WinPE environment.
Once the driver is loaded, if the issue is resolved, you can copy the driver to the Appliance and regenerate the WinPE images.
Creating WinPE Environments
This operation should be performed when adding new WinPE drivers (or if no WinPE 10 environment is present).
- Launch “K2000 Media Manager”
- Enter the Appliance name and Samba password
- In the “Create a K2000 boot environment” tab
- Enter the name of the WinPE environment
- Select the architecture
- Ensure the path matches the installed Windows ADK (default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10)
- Then validate
Setting Default WinPE Environments
If no environment is present on your KACE Appliance, you need to set at least one default WinPE environment.
- In the Control Panel
- General Settings
- Specify the “Default SDA Boot Environment”
